I had orders to present myself to the Porters Lodge at ͨs College. After reporting I was then taken to my room that was in the Masters House situated in quadrangle 5. The room was on the second floor and I would share it for the next six months with a fellow student named Nobby Clark. The College male servant who kept the room clean and served my meals in the Hall was known as a Gyp. The excellence of the College cuisine was appreciated immensely. The 120 course members were distributed throughout the various University Colleges. The course followed the Mechanical Engineering Tripos curriculum. Student gowns had to be worn to all lectures and tutorials. I matriculated into the University on Wednesday 3rd November 1943. We were issued with battle dress and boots etc for the sapper training element such as, believe or not, spade and pickaxe drills, fitted in between lectures. These usually took place on Wednesday afternoons. Warrant Officer Simons in charge of drills had a favourite expression. At maximum voice level he would scream When I give the order quick march take a full step forward. Dont waddle off like pregnant ducks. I was a member of the University Judo Club. When you were being thrown, JJ Konshiel, the instructor, would ask you to add two numbers. While you were thinking of the answer you were on the ground using the correct fall technique subconsciously. My interest in Judo was reawakened when stationed in Singapore and had charge of Japanese POWs. I was also a member of the College Musical Society. The highlight was a smoking concert performed in the Hall. The final term of an extensive concert was Hiawathas Wedding Feast by Coleridge-Taylor. Many of the people shown in the photograph of No. 7 RE Short Course eventually took regular commissions. Notably George Cooper, 4th row down, 3rd from left became a brigadier. He wrote a short autobiography Wrong again Dan, a signed copy of which I have. Don Forbes, 2nd Row down, 7th from right retired as a major, Don and I remained in touch and frequently met up when I visited Newbury until his death in 2008. I am in the front row, 7th from the right. In September 1983 a reunion was held at Emmanuel College, where a course member was the college Bursar. Thirty course members attended. In the photograph Dan Raschen is 2nd from the left, myself 12th from the right, George Cooper, 12th from the left. As I matriculated I consequently remain a member of ͨs College for my lifetime. It has given me great pleasure. I was unable to become a student once more at the end of my service due to a long waiting list. I consequently read Civil Engineering at Birmingham University.
